Reducing backlog of cases was among the numerous improvements to the 63rd/83rd District Attorney’s office cited by D.A. Michael Bagley at the August DRHCC Monthly meeting hosted by Texas Community Bank.
D.A. Bagley, who represents Val Verde, Terrell, and Kinney Counties recognized and credits his staff, the team who helps him accomplish the goals he set out for the District Attorney’s office. One such goal was improving professional relationships with the law enforcement community by conducting various training seminars. Establishing a professional appearance of the elected office is also of utmost importance and the reason for being accessible to the public, having a sign placed on the D.A.’s door, and increasing staff without increasing costs to the counties were also Bagley’s informational and often motivational speech, new membership plaques were presented to Texas Parks and Wildlife and MG Photography. Membership announcements included HEB Unit Director Janie Garcia stated curbside shopping coming to Del Rio in August! IGNC President Dora Alcala announced the much anticipated Vegas on the Border event on July 28 will help raise scholarship funds for Miss Del Rio Court winners. President Otila Gonzalez announced the Amistad Ambassadors will be under the new direction of Mary Mota. Anyone interested in serving on this committee should contact the DRHCC office or Mary Mota. Texas Community Bank and event host Executive Vice President Sylvia Owens gave an update on the construction of the new TCB downtown branch and also announced various types of home mortgage financing is a new service available at Texas Community Bank. The Del Rio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce held its May membership meeting at the Imperius Events located on highway 90W by the lake. Presenters for the evening were Maria Martinez, CEO of the Border Federal Credit Union and Elizabeth Vela- Serrano of Damsel In Defense. Both presenters shared information on the products that their businesses offer to the public and invited the public to visit them. We at the chamber very much appreciate their participation.
The April 6, 2017 membership meeting of the Del Rio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce was hosted by the City of Del Rio at the Del Rio Airport. Oriana Fernandez, Economic Development Director for the City of Del Rio partnered with Juan Carlos Onofre, Airport Manager, to inform those in attendance of the sequence of events undergone to finally re-establishing passenger air service to the community and the surrounding area.
The work and assistance given to this community by Representative Will Hurd in reaching this milestone was acknowledged, as well as was the work and perseverance of elected officials and staff who understand the importance that this service has to any community. The ability to expeditiously connect with the world physically as well as electronically is vital to any economy large and small. Information was provided on outgoing and incoming flight schedules and price of one way and roundtrip tickets. We hope that the citizenry will avail themselves of this service, as the more successful it becomes the better chance we will have of enhancing the service. The thirty people in attendance in the baggage area of the airport were treated to a variety of finger foods and cold drinks. Ms. Fernandez also shared, with each attendee, a spacious tote bag containing various promotional items. Door prices were provided by Raquenel Suday of Wright’s on the Lake Steak House who donated two $25.00 gift certificates. The Del Rio Hispanic Chamber gave two tickets to the upcoming May 27th Scholarship Dance. The SFDRCISD was host to the Del Rio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce March Membership meeting. The DRHCC was joined by the International Good Neighbor Council members at the new Administration Building on Griner Street for the important presentation by Dr. Carlos Rios. President O. Gonzalez welcomed the group and presented plaques to new members the IGNC group, represented by its board members and to The Khoury Group represented by Ms. Norma Floyd.
Dr, Rios presented the plans of the district to propose a Bond Election in May of this year to take build two new elementary schools and to restructure the attendance areas to better serve our student population. The proposed Bond Package is for $60 million dollars of which the State of Texas will pay 55%. Mr. Manuel Pacheco, local businessman, spoke in favor of the passage of the Bond package and presented the pros to getting approval by the community. The hosts provided a spread of sandwiches, fruit, chips and light refreshments for forty in attendance. The gathering was a success and provided ample opportunities to network before and after the business session. The DRHCC sincerely thanks the hosts and those in attendance. The January 12, 2017 Membership meeting of the Del Rio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce was hosted by the City of Del Rio. The presentations by the City Manager Mr. Henry Arredondo and the Honorable Mayor Robert Garza were well received by those in attendance. An overview of all major projects presently in progress is an indication of the positive development that is taking place in our community. Mayor Garza also spoke of the importance and the impact that having commercial air service out of Del Rio has for attracting potential businesses and commercial enterprises. As a Chamber of Commerce, we understand the need for improvement projects that make our community attractive to commercial as well as to residential growth. As individual citizens, our power and responsibility are to support progressive municipal undertakings and realize that today’s inconveniences represent improvements for tomorrow. On July 14, Texas Community Bank hosted our Monthly Membership meeting. Members and guests enjoyed an exquisite traditional Mexican dish, Green Chicken Pozole that was prepared by Irene Garcia Vice President /Financial Services Officer from TCB. Mr. Carlos Ayala Vice President of DRHCC introduced our guest speaker Chris Ryan, Amistad National Recreation Area Superintendent. Superintendent Chris Ryan presented us with varies poster size pictures and maps of our very own National Park. He’s committed to improving and bringing more tourism to our Amistad Lake. Sylvia Owens, TCB Executive Vice President spoke in regards to the status of the Field of Dreams grant application. She also presented us Explore Del Rio the Oasis of Texas book . Mrs. Sylvia Owens introduced the editor of the Explore Del Rio Book Mr. Sergio Aviles. Mrs. Dora Acala spoke on The International Good Neighbor Council’s “Vegas on the Border” fund raiser event. IGNC also gave away three Vegas on the Border Tickets. Other door prizes were bottles of wine donated by Texas Community Bank. Wright’s @ the Lake Steak House sponsored two $25.00 gift certificates. The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce held its monthly membership meeting at the SFDRCISD Administration Building on March 3, 2016. A membership plaque was presented to Genaly’s Filipino Food to welcome this business to the Chamber. Owners Genalyn and Rupert Harmon, spoke to the group about their business and thanked the chamber for its support. Belinda Reyes, a member of the board of directors of the Education Foundation, spoke about the work of the Foundation and the fund raising activities that the organization conducts to fund grants to teachers for student projects. A sample of one of the various projects produced as a result of funding made available by the Foundation was shared with those in attendance. The Foundation, is doing an excellent job of supporting teacher/student creativity to reach beyond the regular curriculum. Those present at the meeting were invited to join in this endeavor that ultimately benefits everyone. School Superintendent Dr. Carlos Rios spoke of the many instructional and infrastructure projects in progress throughout the school district. The different structures under construction and/or renovation have been carefully planned and designed to facilitate, enhance and promote the learning experiences of all students. Students can qualify for dual credit courses and graduate high school with enough college credits to complete the first two years of their college careers and save the expense of two years of college! To most families this represents one half of the cost of a college education! Students who choose the world of work immediately after high school graduation are offered training in various business or trades skills to ready them for immediate integration into the work place. Opportunities abound if students are up for the challenge. In the month of January the City of Del Rio hosted DRHCC’s first Monthly Membership Meeting of 2016. Guest speaker, Mayor Robert Garza, presented the audience with a short video that highlighted key projects that were completed in different parts of town in 2015.
After he spoke about current issues including: a progress report on the condition of the streets, the need for an additional international bridge, creating a customer friendly environment amongst city employees, and the possibilities of training locals to do infrastructure work in house in order to cut costs and save time for future projects. HEB sponsored a rosca, and brought both the “Three Wise Kings” and “HEB Buddy” to celebrate Día de Reyes with members in attendance. Toyota of Del Rio representatives, Sammy Mireles and Chris Lee, were present that night as well as Olga Suday, owner of Wright’s Steak House. Both Toyota and Wright’s were welcomed that night as new incoming members. A $25.00 dollar gift card was raffled at the end of the night, compliments of Wright’s Steak House. DRHCC would like to thank everyone in attendance. We would also like to thank the City of Del Rio and HEB for providing refreshments.
