Power outages occurred affecting over 10,000 in our community. As the waters receded, residents took and posted photos of flooding, damaged and downed trees and power lines. Yet, just a short distance, only a few miles away, our sister city Acuña was devastated as a tornado touched down on the area known as Santa Rosa. Immediately, our citizens responded to a call for help as Texas Community Bank and The Bank and Trust began collecting monetary donations.
Collection sites for water, diapers, powdered milk and more were set up at various Churches, The Bank and Trust, Border One Stop, and the City of Del Rio Civic Center. LA Photo Productions also collected toys to bring smiles to children as they worked to clean out their homes. Mayor Garza, Judge Valdez and Councilwoman Elizabeth Elizalde toured the devastated areas. Councilman Rowland Garza helped man the collection site with Leno Hernandez at the Civic Center. U.S. Border Patrol volunteers joined many other organizations to respond with aid. It has been said that the bridge between our communities does not exist to divide us but rather to unite us.
