Texas Rep. Dustin Burrows Files House Bill 869 to Authorize TXDOT Study of Extending I-27 to Laredo
The proposed extension of Interstate 27 will serve three border crossings with Mexico at Del Rio, Eagle Pass and Laredo.

Texas State Representative Dustin R. Burrows (HD-83) filed House Bill 869 today, legislation directing the Texas Department of Transportation to conduct a feasibility study of extending Interstate Highway I-27 from Lubbock to Laredo.
“This bill would direct TXDOT to examine a critically needed expansion of I-27, which currently ends in Lubbock. Given the economic and population growth West Texas has experienced during the last 20-years, the continuation of the interstate to Laredo would allow for further industry and business expansion along the route,” said Burrows.

The Housing Authority of the City of Del Rio will be offering is annual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program which provides FREE tax assistance to residents of Del Rio and its surrounding areas. The Housing Authority has been participating in the VITA program for over 31 years. The VITA program is a FREE program offered by the IRS and partnering agencies for anyone who makes less than $54,000 a year. In addition to the IRS, we also receive assistance from H.E.B., The City of Del Rio Gateway Apartments and even Xerox. This year if people don’t want to wait, we even offer a website where you can file your own return 100% FREE if you make less than $64,000. There is also over the phone tax support and even a chat box. The website is http://www.unitedway.org/myfreetaxes. All volunteers which come in contact with any tax information are IRS Certified. Not only do we offer Tax preparation services but VITA sites also deliver tax law changes, outreach to the community, financial education and asset building so clients can save a portion of their EITC refunds for a retirement plan and even purchase U.S. Saving Bonds. Our Preparation Site will be open on January 24, 2016 at the John Rowland Center which is located at 440 W Martin. Hours of operation will be Tuesday & Thursday 5:30 p.m. -8:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.  We look forward to seeing everyone.

A Happy and Prosperous New Year 2017 to all! As we start 2017, we look forward to the schedule of work ahead of us in the coming months. Our last project of the year was a great success because of commitment on the part of everyone who participated in it and I personally thank you for it. We look forward to the progress that our leaders have planned for our community and we see some of that progress in the infrastructure projects developing throughout the city. We look forward to a new administration in our country and hope for a stimulated economy to improve workers’ wages that, in turn, will circulate many times through large and small businesses alike. As we look forward to better lives in a peaceful world, we look to see what our individual roles will be in the scheme of things. We all can make a difference somehow! The Del Rio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce can use your talents! As a member of the chamber, please consider our mission, consider your abilities, and consider serving in some capacity.
“The mission of the Del Rio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is to lead the efforts that strengthen and support small, minority’s and women-owned businesses; stimulate and advocate for business growth, development and opportunities; promote excellence in education; promote awareness and preservation of the Hispanic Heritage.”
Let’s make 2017 the greatest of years for Del Rio!
Otila Gonzalez
