IN REMEMBRANCE OF SEPTEMBER 11 It was solemn, as Lt. Alfonso Zertuche and Engineer Oscar Villanueva of the Del Rio Fire Department accompanied by Fire Rescue Officers Christopher Barrera, David Goodson, and Robert Harrison read the accounts of the four terrorist attacks on America on 9/1l. Close to 3,000 people died in the two World Trade Center and its vicinity, including a staggering 343 firefighters and paramedics, 23 New York City police officers and 37 Port Authority police officers who were struggling to complete an evacuation of the buildings and save the office workers trapped on higher floors. Just a short time later, American Airlines Flight 77 circled over downtown Washington, D.C., and slammed into the west side of the Pentagon military headquarters at 9:45 a.m. Jet fuel from the Boeing 757 caused a devastating inferno that led to the structural collapse of a portion of the giant concrete building. All told, 125 military personnel and civilians were killed in the Pentagon, along with all 64 people aboard the airliner. Meanwhile, a fourth California-bound plane–United Flight 93–was hijacked about 40 minutes after leaving Newark International Airport in New Jersey. The passengers fought the four hijackers and are suspected to have attacked the cockpit with a fire extinguisher. The plane then flipped over and sped toward the ground at upwards of 500 miles per hour, crashing in a rural field in western Pennsylvania at 10:10 a.m. All 45 people aboard were killed. Members of the American GI Forum under the direction of Joe & Tina Martinez posted the colors and led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance and distributed American flags. This special 9/11 remembrance included sharing of a personal Del Rio connection by Jeannie Roe of the Military Affairs association. DRHCC Membership plaque was presented to Steve Chafin of The Gata Wealth Management Group of San Antonio. The Vegas Raffle drawing followed with Ruben Castillo announced as the winner! DRHCC thanks everyone who purchased a ticket in support of our small business advocacy. DRHCC also recognized and thanked Willie Hyslop Senior Vice President and Dina Garcia of The Bank and Trust for hosting the meeting.
