Your Del Rio Hispanic Chamber was proud to accept 2015 Small Chamber of the Year Award at this year’s annual convention held in Austin, Texas. President Carmen Gutierrez thanked the Board of Directors, the membership, and TAMACC’s leadership and guidance since DRHCC was first established in 2006.
Eighteen Hispanic Chambers were represented at the Expo and Convention which started with a legislative reception on Thursday night, workshops, Latina Empowerment Luncheon, and Business Expo on Friday, and the annual convention in which member chambers elected a new President and Board of Directors and Saturday evening Awards Banquet. DRHCC would like to thank all our business members for providing promotional items for the Business Expo and to Councilwoman Liz Elizalde for representing the City of Del Rio in support of our award winning program of work. Participating in the Business Expo promoting Del Rio/Val Verde tourism included Director Otila Gonzalez, Member and RSVP Volunteer Ruben C. Gutierrez Jr., Administrative Assistant Judith Montalvo, and President Carmen Gutierrez. Power outages occurred affecting over 10,000 in our community. As the waters receded, residents took and posted photos of flooding, damaged and downed trees and power lines. Yet, just a short distance, only a few miles away, our sister city Acuña was devastated as a tornado touched down on the area known as Santa Rosa. Immediately, our citizens responded to a call for help as Texas Community Bank and The Bank and Trust began collecting monetary donations.
Collection sites for water, diapers, powdered milk and more were set up at various Churches, The Bank and Trust, Border One Stop, and the City of Del Rio Civic Center. LA Photo Productions also collected toys to bring smiles to children as they worked to clean out their homes. Mayor Garza, Judge Valdez and Councilwoman Elizabeth Elizalde toured the devastated areas. Councilman Rowland Garza helped man the collection site with Leno Hernandez at the Civic Center. U.S. Border Patrol volunteers joined many other organizations to respond with aid. It has been said that the bridge between our communities does not exist to divide us but rather to unite us. AUSTIN, TEXAS — The Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce (TAMACC) will honor 12 outstanding Latina business and community leaders at the fourth annual Women of Distinction Awards luncheon Friday, May 8, 2015 at the Four Seasons Hotel, 98 San Jacinto Boulevard, Austin, Texas from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. HEB Three Wise Men made a special appearance at the recent DRHCC January monthly membership meeting. DRHCC Public Relations Director Maggie Roman introduced The Magi, as they were then known, whose names were Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar. She noted the Magi traveled a far distance to pay homage to the Christ child. They brought with them fine gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Three Kings Day remains an important holiday for Hispanics all over the United States and the people of Mexico. In addition to the gift-giving aspect of the day there is also a culinary treat that is specific to the holiday. Known as ‘Rosca de Reyes’ (King’s Cake), this holiday dessert offers much in the way of symbolism. Shaped in the round to signify a king’s crown, this sweet bread holds a special surprise. Baked inside is a small plastic figurine representing the baby Jesus. The effigy of the baby Jesus, hidden inside the cake, represents another aspect of the holiday. The reason Jesus is ‘hidden’ inside the bread is to symbolize how in life, the Christ child’s birth location also needed to remain secret, in order that his life be spared. Whoever finds this token is obligated to host an upcoming party for the occasion of ‘Dia de la Candelaria’ (Candlemas Day) which occurs each year on February 2nd. In recognition of this annual tradition, HEB on Veterans recently hosted a special ROSCA event for the community. A special thank you to Janie Garcia and HEB for providing the Magi and the delicious Roscas enjoyed by everyone at the January meeting. |
