A standing room crowd of close to 100 persons packed the artistic and colorful venue for the July DRHCC meeting hosted by Casa de la Cultura on natural health and wellness. Dr. Musquiz, a nationally recognized speaker on the use of alternative medicines gave a brief and basic overview introducing many key terms used in non-traditional medicine. Alternative medicine can include dietary supplements and herbal remedies, as well as exercise and lifestyle changes. Dr. Musquiz described various types of people using alternative medicines such as the Curanderos and the neighborhood “abuelitas” and why they use them. Dr. Musquiz also gave an example of how someone used the “huevo” (Egg method) to cure an illness and it reportedly worked, according to the patient. A handout on the different types of medicinal plants and herbs was distributed and a tour of the Community Garden was provided. In addition, DRHCC presented membership plaque to Café del Rey- a recent addition to membership. Owner Marcos Fuentes ( My Home Care ) explained the benefits of organic coffee and invited everyone to the exhibitor table. Also present with an exhibitor table was Dave Vasquez with information on the benefits of alkaline water. Dave and Eva Vasquez own The Water Tree Store on Cantu Rd., just past Dr. Lonnie Green Elementary School. DRHCC thanks all those who attended and especially Lupita De La Paz and Casa staff for the wonderful accommodations and refreshments. Due to the huge interest of this particular subject, a PART II to this topic will be scheduled for a later date. Thank you Dr. Musquiz for such an awesome presentation. Bendiciones!
