Why the 2020 Census Matters for Your School

New Statistics in Schools (SIS) activities designed specifically for the 2019-2020 school year spotlight the 2020 Census and the importance of making sure everyone—and especially every child—is counted. A complete count matters a lot to students and schools.

The 2020 count will drive decisions regarding the allocation of more than $675 billion in federal funding to states and communities each year. That includes support for school programs and services such as:

• Special education
• Free and reduced-price lunch
• Reducing class size
• Classroom technology
• Teacher training
• After-school programs
• Head Start


The funding also supports services that influence students’ readiness for learning, such as maternal and child health programs and housing, heating, and food assistance. So, use the SIS activities to make a difference in your students’ lives—this year and in the decade ahead!
